Building a Sustainable Future

In 2007, The Clifford and Camille Kendall Academic Center was certified LEED Gold by the US Green Building Council. Since then, the Universities at Shady Grove has made sustainability one of its core principles. From a recycling program that consistently performs in the top 30% of county businesses to green vehicle charging stations and carpool discounts, the Universities at Shady Grove embraces sustainability.

In 2015 Ģ����ý signed on to the President’s “American Campuses Act on Climate” pledge and since then, we have retrofitted and recommissioned our existing buildings. The Traville Gateway Garage has daylight sensors, a rainwater capture system, and energy efficient elevators. In 2019, we completed the crown jewel of our campus’ sustainability program, the Biomedical Sciences and Engineering Building. Thanks to the innovative use of chilled beams, high efficiency condensing boilers, rainwater recapture, and an extensive array of solar panels, the BSE received LEED Platinum certification. It is truly one of the most sustainable buildings of its kind.

As campus continues to grow, so do our sustainability efforts. We plan to pursue LEED for Existing Buildings certification in Building 1, and are in the process of retrofitting our streetlights to energy-saving LEDs. Additionally, the Shady Grove Garage received ParkSmart Bronze Certification. ParkSmart is the world’s only certification program that defines, measures and recognizes high-performing, sustainable garages.  Visit our to view the green features in our buildings and on our campus.

Solar Panels

In 2019, USG partnered with the Maryland Energy Administration to install solar panel systems on campus.  Solar panel arrays are installed on the Traville Garage, Shady Grove Garage, the BSE, and Building 1. Combined, these solar panels have produced 6.37 GWh over the past year — enough energy to power 621 homes for an entire year or to power a single electric vehicle for 19 million miles.
